Course Objectives

 

Certified Nurse Aide/Nursing Assistant (CNA)

The Nurse Aide program is a comprehensive course designed to teach students the skills and abilities essential to the provision of basic care to patients and residents in hospitals and long term care facilities. Graduates of this program will be able to:

  • Communicate and interact effectively with patients, and their families with sensitivity to their Psychosocial needs.

  • Assist patients in attaining and maintaining maximum functional independence, while observing patient rights.

  • Learn how to perform basic first aid, CPR, take vital signs, apply the elements of basic nutrition in meal planning, and follow infection control measures. 

  • Apply proper body mechanics in bed making, lifting, and turning patients.

  • Protect, support and promote the rights of the residents

  • Demonstrate skill in observing, reporting and documentation

  • Function effectively as a member of the health care team

The approximate time required to complete the Nurse Aide Program Instruction is five weeks for the day program and five weeks for the evening program. Four weeks of classroom instructions and one week of externship at a long term nursing facility.

 

Curse Description

 

Nursing Arts  (NA- 101)

Introduction to Long Term Health Care (LTHC; 16 hours of lecture and lab):  Students will learn the role of nursing aide in LTHC facilities, safety measures, emergency measures, infection control, resident rights and independence, communications and interpersonal skills. students will also learn how to take care of themselves by preventing and managing injuries and physical illness, managing time and protecting themselves legally, etc.  (No Prerequisite) 

Nursing Arts (NA-102)

This course covers  the basic human anatomy and physiology of the human organs systems and the effect of normal aging process on the systems. Student will learn personal care skills, body mechanics, positioning and moving residents, the care of residents environment, assisting with bathing, toileting and perinatal care, skin care, hygiene and grooming, nutrition, hydration and elimination. (No Prerequisite)

Nursing Arts (NA-103)

This lecture introduce students to basic nursing skills. Student will learn how to promote a restraint-proper environment, vital signs, height and weight, observing, reporting and charting, admission, transfer and discharge and coping with death. Knowledge gained in previous courses are expanded to cover the concept of rehabilitation and retroactive care.

Nursing Arts (NA-104)

This course covers restorative services. Students will learn the role of Nurse Aide in restorative care. This course introduce students to Mental Health and Social Services Needs. Students will learn the Psychosocial needs of the residents, culture change, specific behavior problems and cognitive impairment. The role of nursing assistance in the process of patient admission, transfer and discharge will be examined. Student will learn the care for residents with special concerns including dying, people with dementia, and other health issues. (No Prerequisite)

Externship (NA-105)

This is an extension to the classroom experience. This covers clinical practice and social skills. Students will learn conflict resolution and the use of computer technologies in a long term health care setting. (Prerequisites: NA 101, NA 102, NA 103, NA 104). Upon completion of this program student will receive a certificate from the school.

CERTIFIED MEDICATION AIDE PROGRAM (CMA)

Objective

The Medication Aide Program is designed to prepare Nurse Aides and students for administration of medicines under supervision and guidance stipulated by the Texas Health and Human Services, Long-Term Care Division, Medication Aide Permit Program. Students will learn how to use these skills and procedures through classroom and clinical hands-on training. Students will learn the following topics:

  • Introduction to Medication Aide & Basic Concepts. The basic roles and responsibilities of the medication aide in the allied health field. The history and reasons of drug use, drug administration, legislation and therapy, pharmacodynamics, competency skills, and use of generic drugs.

  • Basic Principles of Medication Administration.  Students will learn broadly the basic principles of medication administration.  medication supply and storage, medication orders and potential causes of medication errors and roles and responsibilities of medication aides in drug therapy.  Students will also learn medication preparation, procedures, and techniques for administering medications and how to maintain medication records.

Drug Therapy of Common Disease Processes

Students will learn the value of drugs for therapeutic purposes, and the government regulations to be followed in prescribing, dispensing, and administering drugs.  They will learn about drugs affecting the various body systems (cardiovascular, urinary, respiratory, gastro-intestinal, central nervous system, musculoskeletal, endocrine, and eye, ear and skin). They will learn how to identify possible reactions to particular drugs, and to recognize possible adverse reactions.

Age Related Patient Medication Administration

Students will learn special skills in the administration of medication to patients suffering from age related diseases and disorders as well as younger children.  Students will also learn about administering medication to immuno-compromised patients.

Care Planning and Role of Medication Aide

Students will learn the purpose of care planning, the significance of interdisciplinary care plans and the role of the medication aide in relation to patient care planning.

 

Graduates of this program are eligible to register for the examination required for Medication Aide Permitting under the Health and Safety Code, Chapter 242, Sub Chapter N. The Medication Aide graduates will be qualified for entry-level employment as Direct Care Staff in Long-Term or Personal Care Facilities, Correctional Settings, State Schools and State Hospitals.

Medical Examiner Certification Training

 

Certified Medical Examiner

To become a Certified Medical Examiner candidate must be a Doctor, Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to enroll and complete 8-10 hours medical examiner training online through Liberty Careers Institute. Once you have completed this training, you will apply for 10-digit National Registry certification number also known as Eligibility number by Prometric testing centers, from Department of Transportation (DOT). The DOT will take up to 3 weeks to verify your credentials before emailing you your National Registry number.

Certification Training Program

The goal of this training program is to prepare medical examiners to understand the background, rationale, mission and goals of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) medical examiner's role in reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving commercial motor vehicles. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will have instant access to their Certificate of Completion (required to apply for an account with the DOT/FMCSA and to sit for the national exam) and participants will be eligible to receive up to 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ / contact hours.

Program Description

This program conforms to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) core curriculum specifications to fulfill requirements for the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (National Registry). This training prepares medical examiners to better:

  • Apply knowledge of FMCSA's driver physical qualifications standards and advisory criteria to findings gathered during the driver's medical examination; and

  • Make determinations of the driver's medical and physical qualifications for safely operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) in interstate commerce

Topics covered in this program include:

1) Background, rationale, mission, and goals of the FMCSA medical examiner's role in reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities involving commercial motor vehicles.

2) Familiarization with the responsibilities and work environment of commercial motor vehicle operations.

3) Identification of the driver and obtaining, reviewing, and documenting driver medical history, including prescription and over-the-counter medications.

4) Performing, reviewing and documenting the driver's medical examination.

5) Performing, obtaining and documenting diagnostic tests and obtaining additional testing or medical opinion from a medical specialist or treating physician.

6) Informing and educating the driver about medications and non-disqualifying medical conditions that require remedial care.

7) Determining driver certification outcome and period for which certification should be valid.

8) FMCSA reporting and documentation requirements.
